ETSY Blogger of the Month...Spotted Cow Soaps!

Congrats to Spotted Cow Soaps!

Yay for Spotted Cow Soaps!

Other than an entertaining blogger, this shop has loads of skin-savoring goodies!

You will find delectable and divine soaps, scrubs and more at Spotted Cow Soaps.

My FAVE from this shop is the new holiday Candy Cane Whipped Sugar Scrub!!

I also think I would bask in the yumminess of the Gingerbread Whipped Soap!! Mmmmm!

Another fave of mine from Spotted Cow Soaps' ETSY shop, was the Sparkling Champagne Body Parfait! It looks so good I can just taste it! (Although we are cheekily advised in good humor by the shop NOT to ingest their yummy products) :)

The most creative one I enjoyed and would definitely buy and use, was the Limited Edition Purple Cupcake Soap. My 12 year old would LOVE this! They've "taken a nylon scrubby and embedded it in quality scented glycerin soap to make it look as though there is a huge mass of gooey frosting on top of a cupcake. Smells just like a combination of cake and gooey icing." I just think that's the NEATEST thing!

This shop is PERFECT for holiday gift giving...What's NOT to love??

Visit Spotted Cow Soaps today! You'll be tickled pink!

HOW and WHERE should we market our Handmade Goods Website to the Mainstream Market? A few tips.

HOW AND WHERE TO ADVERTISE YOUR HANDMADE GOODS WEBSITE TO THE MAINSTREAM MARKET: AN OVERVIEW

Recently, a member of my network, Free Craft Marketing Network, brought up a valid question that deserves a complicated answer. :)

So, as Etsy sellers (or sellers of ANY handmade goods on a website), we need to figure out HOW and WHERE to market our small niche to the MAINSTREAM Market (like eBay, Kaboodle and Novica do).

What has worked for me lately (sales wise) are:

http://AbsoluteArts.com

http://LinnCreek.com
http://eCrater.com

They are all free to list. eCrater won't charge for ANYTHING, plus they're backed by Google Checkout and Google Shopping Results. Absolute Arts charges a small percentage of each sale, (can't remember what), and LinnCreek charges a mere 4% of each sale. I have made DOUBLE and TRIPLE the sales at these places than I've made at Etsy, believe it or not! Check them out, as they are a more mainstream and a less artisan to artisan market.

A TWIST ON BUSINESS CARDS AND BROCHURES:
Also, I've nearly DOUBLED my sales by selling at craft shows every month and passing out my business card with each purchase. I make my own business cards with Free business card making software... http://www.newfreedownloads.com/find/business-card.html
This navigated the customers to my sites. Also, make EXTRA cards to pass to your family members to give out for you. Let them proudly wear a piece or two of yours when they plan to attend a special occasion or even to work (I made tons of sales from my sister wearing my jewelry at work. With each sale, I gave her a small percentage and I kept the rest). Another marketing solution is to get a family member, friend or freelancer to be a sales rep for your small jewelry business. A jewelry sales rep is a traveling sales person who carries several independent lines of jewelry that he or she markets to various boutiques and galleries. The sales rep is paid a commission by the jewelry designer of between 10% to 20% of the wholesale price. For example, if a bracelet sells for a retail price of $100, the store pays $50.00 for the item. Out of that $50.00 you pay the rep $7.50, assuming a commission rate of 15%. This saves you time and money as you continue to focus on your jewelry making locally and won't have to worry about traveling expenses.
www.LinkRefferal.com provides a free link exchange service and it has helped me bring in more hits to my webpages. More hits means more traffic and popularity, which means MORE potential customers.

I would also seriously consider making your own brochures and leaving them at local libraries, spas, schools, churches, Art Galleries, bookstores, cafes, other jewelry stores and any other high-traffic community establishments. I always get sales from those. I made my brochures with free brochure making software, too.
http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Best/brochure-making.html

CAPTURE A MAINSTREAM MARKET WITH MAINSTREAM ADVERTISING:
Another thing I do is advertise my jewelry website in the newspaper, highly popular magazines (Lucky, Shop, InStyle, Cosmopolitan, Glamour). Include a special code for those who see your website in the paper so that they can get a special offer on your website when they make a purchase. Although it gets pricey, it DOES end up in sales!! I would do one at a time. There is limited space, so you will pay well in advance for a spot. I usually pay in advance for more than two consecutive spots. I can only afford to do this during the holidays, but it is well worth the effort and money!

Another thing to do is host jewelry (or Handcrafted Goods) parties (have your friends and family invite their friends and coworkers) and include your website address on your invitations and hand out business cards to those who show up. Award the people who show up special web coupons where they can get discounts for their first purchases from your website.

And another idea is, join your local Chamber of Commerce and advertise at all their events (or as many as you can) using your business cards, flyers, brochures and models wearing your pieces! This is a way to DIRECTLY target your specific niche market, while leaving the door open to the mainstream market, since the Chamber of Commerce always ADVERTISES their events on TELEVISION!

And, while you ARE on Etsy, Artfire, and other niche handmade artisan networks, consider selling your jewelry patterns of finished pieces! Some admiring Etsy sellers will want to purchase a pattern or kit of a finished piece that they've been ogling for some time. It's a FREE and near effortless way to financially benefit from your Etsy shop.

Another neat idea: Use YOUTUBE to your advantage! They are FREE and you can create a PowerPoint presentation of the "Grand Re-Opening" of your shop. Let the watcher know of your "Fresh" and "New" and "Low Price" one of a kind pieces! Include lovely photos of you most beautiful pieces, and ALWAYS include your website URL!!! This will generate a lot more traffic to your site with very little effort. With this, you can advertise to millions of people for free.
If you don't have PowerPoint, download it FREE, HERE you get a 60 day free trial. OR, just go for a FREE ALTERNATIVE at ZoHo.com

I also HIGHLY recommend that you submit quality, content-rich articles to various FREE writing platforms and blogs, like:
http://propeller.com
http://helium.com
http://PRLog.com
http://Blogs.eBay.com (great idea--sell AND market at the same time!)
http://blogger.com (the MOST lenient blog for shameless self-promotion!)
http://eZineArticles.com
http://Ace-Reviews.com
http://www.addme.com/nlsubmit.htm
http://www.24-7pressrelease.com/
http://www.scribd.com
http://www.1888pressrelease.com

All the above FREE writing/blogging platforms have built-in plug ins and do all the SEO work for you!

Plus, an ESSENTIAL marketing tactic is off-site SEO factors. Off-site SEO factors means links to your site. This is probably the most grueling and most time consuming effort you will have to make, because you need to get related sites to link to you. These are called "BackLinks". Make sure your site is ready and is content-rich enough that other sites will want to link to you. Check other similar sites' link pages to get more links (http://Indiepublic.com, etsy.com, http://Craftster.org and http://CraftBuddy.com are great places to start with endless links of fellow artisans who are more than eager to trade links if you just ask!).
Make sure you have your target keywords in your link information... WordTracker provides free Targeted Keyword assistance to help you accomplish this. Network with others and exchange links for FREE. **(ahem! Link with me! Message me for a free link exchange!)** The more sites that link to you, the more popular your site will be to web crawlers (search engines)!! Be SURE to link to as MANY quality sites as possible to get your Search Engine ranking up and your shop's visibility optimal!

ALSO (VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!): There is a unique way in which you can build additional inbound links, free of charge, on your own free time. By simply commenting on other individual and company blogs, you may be able to create additional backlinks to your own site. Using a very simple approach to commenting, you can obtain a valued reputation in your own business niche and, in the process, use the blog sites as a way to boost the back links to your site.

Also, check out the competition....who are the highly popular Jewelry sites, for example?

The "mainstream" ones that statistically are doing well are:

http://ice.com
http://QVC.com
http://Overstock.com
http://BlueNile.com
http://WalMart.com (YUP, that's right, Walmart!)
http://Bidz.com
http://HSN.com
(Source: http://http://seekingalpha.com/article/58232-online-jewelry-competition-in... )

The common denominator with the above businesses is that they ALL claim to be "Cheap", "Lowest Priced", "Overstocked" or "Bargains"......Hmmm....what does this tell us?

The "handmade/Artisan" Indie shops that are popular on the search engines are:
http://www.peggyli.com/
http://www.clunygreyjewelry.com/
http://www.bernardine.com/
http://www.leahjewelry.com/
http://www.tinatang.com/
http://www.houstoncrafts.com/
http://kiwijewels.com/
http://www.cyanrift.com/
http://www.tobydesign.com/
http://dashaboutique.com/
http://bookooguru.ecrater.com/
http://lampworkbeadcreations.com/
http://www.glasshoney.com/
http://www.stormrisingdesigns.com/
http://www.beadeuphoria.net/
http://magickalrealism.etsy.com
http://designsbydenisemarie.etsy.com/
http://www.BeadRee.etsy.com

What I noticed about the majority of shops above had in common is that MOST of them advertise with google adwords. Perhaps you've also noticed that the Etsy shops are at the bottom of the list? That's because they were the NOT at the TOP of the Search Engine listings. But the GOOD NEWS is that they WERE ranked extremely high and we can learn something from that. What we can learn is that IT IS POSSIBLE TO RANK HIGH IN THE SEARCH ENGINE LISTS AS AN ETSY SHOP!

The MOST popular Artisan Jewelry/Goods sites that are advertised to the mainstream public are:

http://jewelry.novica.com/
http://www.blueluxe.com/
http://UncommonGoods.com
http://www.like.com/jewelry
http://www.rubylane.com/artisanjewelry.html
http://Kaboodle.com

I didn't even see Etsy on the front page of ANY of my searches for "handmade jewelry" (except on the right-hand side with the Google Adwords ads)! Etsy shops didn't show up until the 14th and 15th pages!! Etsy just isn't as SEO-friendly as the other more popular sites (likd eBay), unfortunately (although I am noticing improvements on a daily basis!). But, you can use SEO tools to MAKE YOUR Etsy page SEO-friendly!
Check out the following FREE SEO tools for your website:
http://tools.seobook.com/
http://www.seocompany.ca/tool/seo-tools.html
http://www.seotoolset.com/tools/free_tools.html

http://www.goingup.com/

Think of a solid Online marketing plan. What do the pros do to market jewelry and goods online? They focus on:
1) Search Engines ( http://DMOZ.org , http://yahoo.coom , http://gimpsy.com , http://www.dogpile.com/ , http://LiveSearch.com )
2) Web Portals (Etsy, ArtFire, eCrater, eBay, Facebook, Digg, Blogger, Twitter )
3) Affiliates (Friends, Family, Hired Freelancer)
4) e-Mail Programs ( http://iContact.com/Email_Advertising )
5) Pay-Per-Click Ads ( http://adwords.google.com , http://www.targetwebvisitors.com/ , http://PositionTech.com , http://Business.com )

I recommend http://WordTracker.com to help you check your keywords to market to the right targets!

So ARE you marketing to the right targets?

You don't want to market diamond rings to college students.

MAKE SURE to Find out what sells the MOST and if you think you can conform to it, then get to making it:

In 2004, Blue Nile reached 2.7 percent market share of the estimated $4.7 billion U.S. engagement ring market.

...the engagement market in the U.K. alone is a little over $900 million in U.S. dollars. So it's about a fifth a size of the U.S. market.

(Quotes from the CCBN StreetEvents transcript.)

Go to http://http://seekingalpha.com to research the market and find what sells most!

ALSO: Color Marketing is a practical, free way to attract customers. If you are marketing a website, it's a good idea to know which colors to display most. For example, Red, the color of Danger, is a good color for the Car Industry. What's your color?
According to Precision Intermedia, the leading authority in "Color Psychology" in marketing, these colors evoke the following emotions in the minds of our customers (as Polled).

Psychology of Color: Black

Black is the color of authority and power, stability and strength. It is also the color associated with intelligence (doctorate in black robe; black horn rimmed glasses, etc.) Black clothes make people appear thinner. It's a somber color sometimes associated with evil (the cowboy in the black hat was almost always the "bad guy"). In the western hemisphere black is associated with grieving. Black is a serious color that evokes strong emotions; it is easy to overwhelm people with too much black.

Psychology of Color: White

For most of the world this is the color associated with purity (wedding dresses); cleanliness (doctors in white coats) and the safety of bright light (things go bump in the night ... not the bright sunshine!). It is also used to project the absence of color, or neutrality. In some eastern parts of the world, white is associated with mourning. White associated with creativity (white boards, blank slates). It is a compression of all the colors in the color spectrum.

Psychology of Color: Gray

Gray is most associated with the practical, timeless, middle-of-the-road, solid things in life. Too much gray leads to feeling mostly nothing; but a bit of gray will add that rock solid feeling to your product. Some shades of gray are associated with old age, death, taxes, depression or a lost sense of direction. Silver is an off-shoot of gray and often associated with giving a helping hand, strong character (sterling in-fact!).

Psychology of Color: Red

If you want to draw attention, use red. It is often where the eye looks first. Red is the color of energy. It's associated with movement and excitement. People surrounded by red find their heart beating a little faster and often report feeling a bit out of breath. It's absolute the wrong color for a baby's room but perfect to get people excited. Wearing red clothes will make you appear a bit heavier and certainly more noticeable. (Some studies show red cars get more tickets but that maybe because the red car owners drive faster or the ticket giver notices the movement of the red car more prominently). Red is not a good color to over use but using a spot of red in just the right place is smart in some cases (one red accent in a otherwise neutral room draws the eye; a red tie with a navy blue suit and white shirts adds just the right amount of energy to draw the eye (no wonder it's the "uniform of the day" at the seats of government). Red is the symbol of life (red blooded life!) and, for this reason, it's the color worn by brides in China. Red is used at holidays that are about love and giving (red roses, Valentines hearts, Christmas, etc.) but the true color of love is pink. Pink is the most calming of all colors -- often our most dangerous criminals are housed in pink cells as studies show that color drains the energy and calms aggression. Think of pink as the color of romance, love, and gentle feelings, to be in the pink is to be soothed.

Psychology of Color: Blue

Ask people their favorite color and a clear majority will say blue. Much of the world is blue (skies, seas). Seeing the color blue actually causes the body to produce chemicals that are calming; but that isn't true of all shades of blue. Some shades (or too much blue) can send a cold and uncaring message. Many bedrooms are blue because it's calm, restful color. Over the ages blue has become associated with steadfastness, dependability, wisdom and loyalty (note how many uniforms are blue). People tend to be more productive in a blue room because they are calm and focused on the task at hand. Some studies are showing that weight lifters can lift more weight in a blue gym - in fact, nearly all sports are enhanced in blue surroundings.

Psychology of Color: Green

The color of growth, nature, and money. A calming color also that's very pleasing to the senses. Dark forest green is associated with terms like conservative, masculine and wealth. Hospitals use light green rooms because they too are found to be calming to patients. It is also the color associated with envy, good luck, generosity and fertility. It is the traditional color of peace, harmony, comfortable nurturing, support and well paced energy.

Psychology of Color: Yellow

Cheerful yellow the color of the sun, associated with laughter, happiness and good times. A person surrounded by yellow feels optimistic because the brain actually releases more serotonin (feel good chemical in the brain) when around this color. It is the color associated with optimism but be careful with yellow, when intense, it is the color of flames and studies show babies cry more in (bright) yellow rooms and tempers flare more around that color too. It has the power to speed up our metabolism and bring out some creative thoughts (legal tablets are yellow for good reason!). Yellow can be quickly overpowering if over-used, but used sparingly in the just the right place it can be an effective tool in marketing to greater sales. Some shades of yellow are associated with cowardice; but the more golden shades with the promise of better times.

Psychology of Color: Orange

The most flamboyant color on the planet! It's the color tied most this fun times, happy and energetic days, warmth and organic products. It is also associated with ambition. There is nothing even remotely calm associated with this color. Orange is associated with a new dawn in attitude.

Psychology of Color: Purple

What color were the robes of kings and queens? Yes, they were purple, our most royal color that is associated with wealth, prosperity, rich sophistication. This color stimulates the brain activity used in problem solving. However, when overused in a common setting it is associated with putting on airs and being artificial/ Use purple most carefully to lend an air of mystery, wisdom, and respect. Young adolescent girls are most likely to select nearly all shades of purple as their favorite color.

Psychology of Color: Brown

This color is most associated with reliability, stability, and friendship. More are more likely to select this as their favorite color. It's the color of the earth itself "terra firma" and what could represent stability better. It too is associated with things being natural or organic. Caution however, for in India it is the color of mourning.

How are you going to prepare your business for the holiday rush? Some Tips!

If you have an Etsy store like me, it's essential to prepare for the holiday season to make the most of the potential sales and possible future returning customers.

Although the holidays do provide an opportunity for shop owners to make up for slow sales that occurred all year, for the unprepared online store owner the holiday season can be a disaster, rather than a profitable success. Being unprepared for increased sales, having slow shipping times and out of stock items will most likely annihilate your holiday sales profits and probably your sales for the new year. Adding new products, advertising more aggressively, and multiple listing of your products will not help you if you are unable to handle the increased sales.

Before I do anything else, I would consider whether or not my Etsy store carries the items people tend to purchase as gifts. Shoppers typically purchase clothing, jewelry, toys or electronics, especially unique ones, as gifts. Either way, it's pertinent to evaluate what is needed in order to ultimately maximize holiday sales revenues. Lucky for us Etsy Shops, most of us do indeed sell these items, so this is in our favor.

FIRST:

I would want to have help. Get a family member or friend to assist with production, paperwork, listing, advertising, accounting, sales promotions, or handling orders. I've learned that I can't do all that myself and keep my sanity! If you want more sales, you have to make sure you have the ability and help to handle such increased volume.

SECOND:

I make sure to have enough items in stock. I typically pre-make everything, but if I do get a special custom order, I am diligent to inform the customer the time it will take to create and ship the item to them. I ALWAYS overestimate this time to insure customer satisfaction every time. Underestimating such time will not only irritate your customer, but it will also stress you out and even possibly lower the customer's persuasion of your business and you DON'T want that!

THIRD:

I always order packaging early. Why wait? I just go to the USPS website and order plenty of boxes and envelopes. Take an inventory of what you will need such as bubble wrap (or packing peanuts), and order it four weeks in advance. It's important to know the shipping date deadlines, too. You don't want to be floundering around for a last minute box or packing because you failed to order in enough advance time!

FOURTH:

I would also suggest that a newbie join groups, forums, referral sites and free advertising platforms and interact with other sellers. The best way to learn about online selling, as with anything in life, is to talk to others who have experience. You will save valuable time and money by learning from the mistakes of others. I offer a free advertising platform called Free Craft Marketing Network.

SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS AS JEWELRY? YUP!

MY DAY JOB ALSO INSPIRES ME IN MY JEWELRY DESIGN BUSINESS!

I'm a Surgical Assistant by day...well, actually I work from 6:30am to 7pm. But my job involves passing instrumentation as well as assisting surgeons with their operations. I've seen a lot of sad, strange, funny and inspiring moments in the operating room. I've also seen some potential jewelry and craft design additions! A lot of neat instrumentation and supplies in the O.R. can serve as a design idea to incorporate into your jewelry making or fine crafting!

Although I've thought of it before it even came out, I've seen "human anatomy" parts used as jewelry and statement pieces, which I think is just too cool. But I cannot take credit for that since I never took the initiative originally. But I MUST take credit for my neato ideas spawned from my day job, as a Surgical Assistant.

I took an unused, disposable #11 Scalpel Blade (which was about to be disposed of anyway) and traced it on paper. Then I retraced it on sterling silver sheet. After that I pounded, sliced and buffed away at the silver to create an EXACT replica of the Scalpel Blade (only, NOT sharp enough to cut like a scalpel blade!) to be worn as a unique, statement-making, unisex pendant on a leather cord.

I love my jobs--BOTH of them! As a Surgical Assistant, I get to help save lives every day. As a Jewelry Artisan and Metalsmith, I get to nurture my creativity and my need for a creative outlet. And now I've found a way to bond both satisfying fields of work, in a unique, personal way.

I also found that certain catheters make great rubber neck cords, several types of small steel probes make neat wire forms, eye/ear, neuro and vascular instrumentation make novel ideas for unique pendants since they are so small and odd-looking, and let's not forget that hemostats make wonderful wire-twisting and grasping tools, and bulldog clamps make excellent stone-setting forceps!

Does your day job influence your creativity? If so, why? And how?

BABIES AND CHILDREN IN THE CRAFT REVOLUTION

Have you noticed more and more crafters and artisans have been creating beautiful masterpieces with babies and children in mind? I have! I think it's precious!

But also, on a MARKETING LEVEL, it's wise to include this influential niche. Here's just a few reasons why....

Young children are increasingly the target of advertising and marketing because of the amount of money they spend themselves, the influence they have on their parents spending (the nag factor) and because of the money they will spend when they grow up.[1] Whilst this child-targetted marketing used to concentrate on sweets and toys, it now includes clothes, shoes, a range of fast foods, sports equipment, computer products and toiletries as well as adult products such as cars and credit cards.

In Australia, children under 18 have an average $31.60 to spend each week and they influence more than 70 per cent of their parents' clothes and fast food purchases.[2] Advertisers attending a conference on Marketing to Kids and Youth were told that children and teenagers between the ages of 10 and 17 spent $3.3 billion every year.[3]

In the US there are over 57 million school age children and teenagers who spend about $100 billion each year of their own and their family's money on sweets, food, drinks, video and electronic products, toys, games, movies, sports, clothes and shoes.[4] Additionally children 12 and under spend more than $11 billion of their own money and influence family spending decisions worth another $165 billion on food, household items like furniture, electrical appliances and computers, vacations, the family car and other spending.

HERE ARE SOME INTERESTING KID MARKETING FACTS:
New Dream Poll, “Nag Factor”
According to a national survey commissioned by the Center for a New American Dream:

* American children aged 12 to 17 will ask their parents for products they have seen advertised an average of nine times until the parents finally give in.
* More than 10 percent of 12- to 13-year-olds admitted to asking their parents more than 50 times for products they have seen advertised.
* More than half of the children surveyed (53%) said that buying certain products makes them feel better about themselves. The number is even higher among 12- to 13-year-olds: 62% say that buying certain products makes them feel better about themselves.
* Nearly a third of those surveyed (32%) admitted to feeling pressure to buy certain products such as clothes and CDs because their friends have them. Over half of 12- to 13-year-olds (54%) admitted to feeling such pressure.
* The nagging strategy is paying dividends for kids and marketers alike: 55% of kids surveyed said they are usually successful in getting their parents to give in.8

FREE SEO TOOLS & TRAFFIC IDEAS FOR ARTISANS WITH WEBSITES (OR WHO WANT ONE)

HOW TO ATTRACT FREE TRAFFIC TO YOUR HANDMADE PRODUCTS SITE

Some of the best quality free traffic sources include search engines, Banner Exchanges, Link Exchanges, Niched top lists, Freebie Sites, Targeted Traffic Networks, Directories and link lists; here is an overview of each.

Search Engine Traffic.
Search engine traffic is considered one of the most valuable sources of free traffic because you have the first shot at converting the surfer into a buyer. What’s difficult about attracting search engine traffic is that it requires a high level of skill and experience, and that - even with that skill and experience - search engines are fickle creatures who can change their ranking methods overnight, causing drastic changes to your traffic figures and your livelihood.
For this reason it’s very inadvisable to rely solely on search engine traffic; smart webmasters learn to diversify and successful webmasters are those who can attract and convert traffic from a wide variety of sources.
Submitting your site to Search Engines MANUALLY is NOT RECOMMENDED! It's wiser and easier to submit through decent, user-friendly submission services and also using SEO software to do it for you.
Some good, FREE site submission services include:
www.submitexpress.com/ Will submit your website URL to 40 major search engines.
http://www.addpro.com/ Will submit your website URL to 18+ major search engines and offers FREE SEO resources.
http://www.quickregister.net/ Submits your website details to 300+ Major Search Engines and Directories while you sit back and relax? Including Google, Yahoo, AOL, MSN, AllTheWeb, Overture, Netscape Search, Open Directory Project, Lycos, HotBot and AltaVista

Banner Exchanges.
Banner exchanges are pretty much the lesser quality form of free traffic, believe it or not!
Most experienced webmasters will reserve this option for surfers who have looked at everything they have to offer and still haven’t “bitten”… It’s recommended you do the same! Though there are a select few good banner exchange networks, the best ones will offer a 1:1 or 2:1 ratio, meaning for every 1 hit (or 2 hits with 2:1) they receive through your site, they will advertise your banner 1 time on their site, sending you potentially at least 1 visitor.
The best, most reliable Banner Exchange sites are http://www.thecountrygallery.net/ , http://www.artcraftmarketing.com/ , http://www.freecraftfair.com/ , http://www.lillysplace.net/bannerex/faqs.php and http://www.targetcrafts.com/ .
IT WOULD DO YOU SOME GOOD TO TRADE BANNERS WITH ME, TOO!
http://sapphireice.eCrater.com , http://sapphireice.etsy.com , http://freecraftmarketing.ning.com , http://sapphireicestudios.blogspot.com Trading with me is FREE!

Link Exchanges.
Link exchanges are actually the better quality form of free traffic.
One very important thing for every webmaster is link exchange with others. By this way you can easily increase your Google PR and overall site popularity, also your site will be better positioned on Search Engine Results Pages. This means that you will increase your site traffic. And you know that better traffic equals more money for you.
There are many ways to find sites to link to. My faves are Google, StumbleUpon, Blogger (Link to other Bloggers to increase your traffic!) and Digg.
There's also free SEO software that includes "Link Partner Finder" technology, like WEB CEO software does. http://www.webceo.com/download/
There are professional, free link exchange sites that drive traffic to your site as well.
http://linkreferral.com
is an EXCELLENT source of FREE advertising and link exchange. Other site owners visit and rate your site, plus you can do the same. We’ve already had 1,000 hits to our site in just the month of September!
IT WOULD DO YOU SOME GOOD TO TRADE LINKS WITH ME, TOO!
http://sapphireice.eCrater.com , http://sapphireice.etsy.com , http://freecraftmarketing.ning.com , http://sapphireicestudios.blogspot.com Trading with me is FREE!

Niched Top Lists.
Niched top lists can be a good source for quality free traffic, because it is already filtered to some extent. You need to find the best top lists by trial and error, it can be time-consuming but well worthwhile, as your hits can soar.
http://www.artcraftmarketing.com/topsites/index.htm , http://crafterscatalogs.com/links.html , http://www.thecountrygallery.net/bp/ and http://jewelrysrtist.gotop100.com/ are some good ones that are free to list and also serve as a good networking source.

FREEBIE GIVEAWAY SITES.
Freebie Sites are normally much higher volume but the quality is poor for two reasons:
1. Surfers are just interested in free gifts and giveaways.
2. You have very little opportunity to sell or improve your targeting (click thru ratios are low).
I would only recommend this as a method of FREE EXPOSURE and if you have extra time and resources on your hands.
If you have any chance at obtaining quality traffic from such sites, the following sites are recommended:
http://www.thefreesite.com/Other_Freebie_Sites/ , http://www.volition.com/freesite.html , http://www.ofree.net/freebie_sites.html are the most popular Freebie sites with the most traffic.

FREE NETWORKING SITES.
Free Networks provide very high volumes of traffic but converting that traffic can be quite difficult because:
1. Surfers are most often focused on getting posting their own stuff, making friends or are just browsing photos of other handmade works.
2. Opportunities for advertising are limited as these sites are often congested with other advertisements and there may be a waiting list.
3. (IMHO) due in part to the overly aggressive advertising methods used by webmasters of old, surfers loathe to click on advertisements in galleries for fear of entering “pop-up hell”!
However, with a high level of experience, it is possible to achieve a reasonable conversion ratios, and - since traffic figures are sometimes huge - it becomes a “numbers game”…
Making enough money to cover your bandwidth bill is the name of this game. I recommend you try this method only after you have reached a reasonably high level of skill at converting traffic into sales. Try the lesser known networks like Indiepublic, a NICHE site, rather than Myspace, a GENERAL site.
Some high-quality craft networks (other than www.Indiepublic.com) with minimal to no pop-ups are:
http://www.craftbuddy.com/
http://www.craftnetwork.org/
http://www.craftster.org/

Directories and Link Lists.
Probably the best, fastest and certainly one of the most long term methods of attracting free traffic is by building standard handmade product sites that offer "free gifts" or "freebies” and getting those sites listed in established link lists and craft/handmade product directories.
Traffic from link lists and directories can be high quantity and is normally quite highly targeted, and customers LOVE free stuff.
Converting traffic from these sources is much easier as the four or five pages involved gives you plenty of opportunity to target and sell to the surfer.
I really like http://www.whatthecraft.com/dirbuysell.html because it provides a directory of not just sellers for customers, but link traders for crafters to come together and link to one another, so it's a two-in-one service and it's FREE.

Converting Traffic into Sales
In order to successfully “convert” handmade products traffic, it is vital to help the surfer to find out what he / she really wants.
Sometimes surfers will venture into a handmade crafts venue just out of curiosity, or because they admire that handmade items are "unique" and great for gifts of meaning. We, as Entrepreneurial Artisans need to take advantage of this, and compose a marketing campaign dedicated to convincing the surfer and potential buyer that this is true and that they need to purchase this item, as it is one of a kind, unique, limited edition, not available for very long, etc.
Every day people reach legal age to obtain a job, own a checking account and/or credit card, (the first time with a credit card & the legal right to use it - lol), or even are surfing the internet for the very first time! We need to consider this in our marketing campaigns as well!

When traffic first arrives from a search engine, it is targeted to some extent by virtue of the search terms used.
Many surfers however, will use very general search terms “freebies”, “handmade jewelry”, “cheap gifts”, etc.
The key to success is in learning ways to encourage the surfer to make choices and thereby signify where his / her interests really lay. This is called “filtering traffic”. In order to filter your traffic you have simply to offer enough choice.
It’s all about offering enough choice.

Looking at all the lists of free traffic sources, it’s simple to imagine that it will be much easier to convert a surfer via a free categorized directory, than with a picture post of a PRODUCT on a similar site as your own!
There are hundreds of different ways of converting traffic into sales, some are simple, whilst others are very advanced.
With knowledge, practice, experience, and good quality free traffic sources (like the ones listed above), you can achieve very high conversion levels.

CHECK OUT http://www.123webmaster.com/ for additional information! In their webmaster resources directory, you’ll find links to quality resources which include detailed instructions on how to build free sites and galleries, how to build for top lists, posts, link lists and directories, plus projects and ideas to diversify your site building, targeting and traffic conversion skills.

ETSY SELLERS SPOTLIGHT PT. 2

One of my FAVE things to do is find ETSY SELLERS with neato products that are handmade and entirely unique!

I am separating them into categories:

ROUGH/RAW STONE JEWELRY:
DELICATE CREATIONS

The artisan who runs DELICATE CREATIONS effortlessly and artfully utilizes rough crystals and stones, creamy pearls and lush designs to create striking masterpieces and very wearable art, with the luxury of genuine gemstones and faceted crystals. It would truly be a treat to take home one of these lovelies!

I love this seller's GORGEOUS Blue-Green Marshmallow Stone Necklace
It's my favorite because it invokes fluffy, pale blue clouds against cool, silver rain droplets.

FACETED/CUT STONE JEWELRY:
Jayne Philp

Jayne Philp's collection consists of classic, clean pieces, accompanied by clusters of delicious gems and splashes of colorful crystals.

I HEART Jayne Philp's Smokey Quartz, Garnet & Vermeil Bracelet
It's my fave because it has a cool, luxe feel but with an earthen color palette and warm gold. Just YUMMY!

BEADWORK JEWELRY: PINK POOCH DESIGNS

PINK POOCH DESIGNS' Lucille Ball Bracelet is my fave, since it features a beaded stitch design of Lucy's gorgeous face and hair! It looks just like her, too!

WIREWORK JEWELRY: That's Headley

That's Headley offers gorgeous wirework of seamless designs, incorporated with tightly coiled precious metals and semi-precious stones of exotic, spicy hues, all coming together to create intricate, detailed designs with quality components and easy wearability!

My fave piece is for sure, the Wondrous Sterling & Garnet Cross Necklace since it reminds me of Old World Spain and the wrought iron gates surrounding gilded, stone-clad churches with peeling walls and stained glass.

METALWORK JEWELRY: Vittoria Banks

I absolutely ADORE Vittoria Banks' Spiderweb Pendant! It's divine design offers a hefty sheet of hammered copper punctured with Sterling Silver wire "web" and bail. I am just SMITTEN!

Another favorite of mine she created is the pair of Yellow Coral in Fuses Earrings which are sleek and simple yet striking and lightweight! Golden coral glows from within light fuses that encase and protect it. Just dazzling!

PMC BEADS/PENDANTS:
DAISY JANE DESIGNS

Daisy Jane Designs offers exotic, modern and even vintage-inspired pieces that are always bold and striking in appearance, as well as luxe in ambience. The detail and craftsmanship is intricate and well executed. The art is near perfect. Each piece is unique, easy on the eyes and distinctive, to say the least!
My favorite piece was the Fine Silver Face Pendant with Pearls.... The genuine-looking, etched face on the pendant is shaded in all the right places to make the pendant look 3-D. The added touch of the creamy, steel-hued pearls give it a boudoir-like feel that makes me want to tie on a sexy lace corset and drink fine brandy.

DICHROIC GLASS BEADS/PENDANTS: OurGlassWire

I just can't get enough of this shop's dichroic glass pendants! My fave is the Wire-wrapped Dichroic Glass Pendant Set. It is simply stunning! The glorious spectral display of color play will take your breath away! Top that with shiny sterling silver and you're in heaven! This set is heavenly, indeed!

LAMPWORK GLASS BEADS: Michal S

Michal S' shop is so fun to look through! The colors of all the handmade lampwork beads are just beyond me! I LOVE colors, and the way Michal S. utilizes them amazes me! You've got to check out the Michal S- Rainbow Dots- Lampwork nugget bead set It's a pair of near identical lampwork nuggets that are squared and swirled with every color you can imagine, then dotted with even more splashes of color. They would make striking earrings or focal point pieces!

LAMPWORK GLASS PENDANTS: BOOM WIRE

I just had to give an honorable mention to Boom WIre's Glass lampwork focal double frog pendant!!! I am in awe at how realistic and perfect this lovely piece is!

CERAMIC BEADS:
DANCING BEAR

I like skulls and "day of the dead" type adornments. So when I stumbled across Dancing Bear's Peruvian Ceramic Skull Wheel Bead, I flipped over it! It's handmade in Peru and the detail is astounding. Check it out!

CERAMIC PENDANTS: PAPER WINGS

I am loving Paper Wings' Ceramic Leaf Necklace!! It's elegance and understated beauty is timeless in simplicity, yet modern in design. I just wanna lay in a pile of warmly-hued maple leaves in the middle of Autumn, staring at the Fall sky when I look at it! I DEFINITELY favorited Paper Wings!

GLASSWARE:
MODIFIED MINDS

I was tickled pink to find Modified Minds' Drip Skull Brandy Snifters! The adorable little painted skulls are literally "dripped" onto the glass and instantly give these snifters a unique, lovably macabre look! They really brought a grin to my face!

POTTERY: CERAMICS BY SUMIKO

I am just captivated by Sumiko's Pretty Little Ginkgo Plates Set of 4! Each are a different color and when put together are perfect in unison as on piece! Not to mention the quality crafsmanship and gorgeous shine of the glaze. Delicious Dining Perfection! All the other Leaf-Like pieces I looked at are also gorgeous. They look like they were just picked off a branch or bush. Just lovely.

PORCELAIN & CHINA: KH Phillips

I was wide-eyed in wonderous splendor when I ogled KHPhillips' 3 Small Vases/Tumblers... The glazework is stupendous and it's earthy, clay-like look is so pleasing to behold. They would match just about anything in your home, with the blues, greens, creams, taupes and browns gracing the surfaces.

KH Phillips also sews art-quilts. In fact, the store banner has a hilarious line that states, "MudSTUFFING....He Throws, He Sews". I just loved that.

I especially liked the Original Art Quilt... It was so original and the colors are warm and spicy like cinnamon with some royal blue and green to add some soothing eye-therapy. I'd put it on my sofa for everyone to admire as they visit my home.

GARDEN ORNAMENTS/FOLK ART: APRIL777

APRILL777's garden wreath collection is just darling! The work is painstakingly detailed in the mini furniture and straw hats and ribbons entwined in rounded twigs, straw and leaves.

I loved APRIL777's Small Gardening Lover's Wreath! It features mini straw hats, adorable gardening tools, cute clay pots, and a tiny wooden bench! So charming and authentic!

MINIATURES: K's K-9's

Speaking of miniatures....I just HAD to bring up this shop!! I am raving over this! You need to see this shop if you are a pet lover!! This artist will sculpt and needle felt a miniature of any pet from a photo (or real life). The detail is incredible and the craft is perfected. Plus the artist also sculpts other pets, too such as cats and bunny rabbits!

My favorite was the Needle Felted Spotted Eared Dog Purse Clip...It is the most precious thing you'll ever see!

MINIATURES HONORABLE MUST MENTION:
LOVIN CLAY DOLLS

This shop godsmacked me with the convincing clay babies! Absolutely ADORABLE dolls made of polymer clay! So realistic and so incredibly cute! I just wanna pinch their little rosy cheeks!

My fave was the Happy Day Baby Boy in Blue Polka Dot Flower....What a darling, splendid display of cuteness! The sculpting ability of the artist is fabulously life-like and is a must see! Even the pacifiers are realistic!
I just couldn't stop smiling as I visited this shop.

FREE & CHEAP ONLINE MARKETING FOR CRAFTERS & DUMMIES

So, now that we've established all the free marketing resources (See MARKETING YOUR JEWELRY ONLINE), we need to tackle free business plans, free financing referrals, free business templates and other free online and offline marketing tools. I also want to cover free Web-Based jargon tutorials, like HTML for Dummies, and also FREE NETWORKING online.

Let's face it, as crafters trying to make it online, we need to know not just the basics of such harrowing tasks, but we also need to gain a knowledge and skill of these feats, in order to make us better online business owners and marketers. The web is where we can reach the entire world from our sofa at home. So let's get started!

Did you know that you don't have to pay for vital business forms or even get a lawyer? There are free resources out there to assist you in breaking out into the online craft business world, without breaking your wallet...or purse! Here are some HIGHLY RECOMMENDED sites to find what you need to launch your business and keep it thriving......

FIRST THING'S FIRST: RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH! You will not only create and produce the products, but you will be dealing with the business aspects of this as wels, such as marketing, selling, bookkeeping, purchasing and other minute details. If you will hire other people to help you produce your products, you will need to learn about managing and keeping personnel. I would seriously consider stocking up from your LOCAL LIBRARY, as well as maybe taking a course or two on Business Management and Accounting, and maybe even a Basic Computer course if you're not web-savvy, from a COMMUNITY COLLEGE. It will only help you, not hurt you, in your business venture.

BEFORE YOU START SELLING ONLINE OR EVEN AT CRAFT SHOWS, Find out about local state regulations. As the owner of your own business, you will have to understand and comply with local regulations, including licenses and permits that you need to operate your business legally in your state. Even if you intend to sell only at the local trade shows, and even certain ONLINE venues, you will usually be asked for your permit and/or will need to collect sales tax.

DON'T FORGET TO Separate your business from your personal account. While this is not essential to your start-up phase, having a separate business account from your personal account can make life easier for you especially at tax time. You need to prove that your craft business is not a hobby - and that it is indeed a business - before you can be allowed to deduct your business expenses from your income. OK....So here's how we play "TAG" with other ARTISANS!

SO......I've been "tagged" recently. Interesting! Here are the rules to being tagged:

1) Link to the person who tagged you
2) Post the rules on your blog (that would be these)
3) Write 6 random things about yourself
4) Tag 6 people at the end of your post and link to them
5) Let each person know they have been tagged and leave a comment on their blog
6) Let the tagger know when your entry is up

So, what's next?? Looks like I should post 6 random things about myself if I know what's good for me! Here goes nothing......or, hopefully, SOMETHING!

1) I LOVE networking and helping others achieve their goals!
2) I research EVERYTHING....from how to BLOG to what to do when your dog craps on your carpet!! LOL!!
3) I LOVE rough crystals, Faceted RARE gemstones & funky Polymer Designs.
4) I appreciate people who stand up to me.
5) My day/evening job is as a Surgical Assistant to some of the most talented surgeons in the country. Shhhhhhhhh!
6) I have NO IDEA how to let someone know when my entry is up! Ha,Ha!

1) My all time fave is Star of the East.....Absolutely stunning, Oceanic-Inspired jewelry and accessories, tastefully arranged & decorated for ultimate Unusual Adornment. These are things people will stop you on the street over and ask where you got that necklace or ring! My fave item is the Sea Urchin Collection-White and Gold Cuff....CHECK IT OUT!

2) CHECK OUT BEADY MONKEY! She has been creating jewelry and trinkets for 11 years. Her profile on ETSY even shows you how to to keep her handmade jewelry clean & shiny! I LOVE her gorgeous Baladi Earrings! You can see her blog at: http://beadymonkey.blogspot.com/

4) OMG! You've got to visit Rio Rita's Etsy Shop! Raw & Natural, yet Refined & tasteful! This shop focuses their jewelry as mainly designed in silver and gold and claim to like their jewelry to look three-dimensional or sculptured. My fave piece was the pair of ANCIENT STYLE SILVER EARRINGS WITH TURQUOISE BEADS!
All I can say is, WOW! Such TALENT!

5) nother producer of absolutely EXQUISITE pieces is snegoratchka on ETSY! The artist actually graduated from the Massachusetts College of Art, where she received a degree in metalsmithing. My ultimate favorite has to be the Leaning -M- fold formed copper bracelet! It's simple, sleek and Dramatic all at once! It's something I could wear daily!

6) I am in LOVE with CRAFTY SHELLS!
I especially enjoyed the Seashell Frame Shell Craft Kit - Make Your Own Seashell Frame! CRAFTY SHELLS
